Summer break is officially here and finding the balance between fun and continued education for the few months off is tough. I love being able to use the kids devices for educational purposes and the you tube kids app makes it super easy to create a fun way to have my kids do a summer reading project. This is the 2nd year that they are doing the #readalong for 30 days program. Each day kids are challenged to read along in a different fun summer setting and having the additional activities on the app to coincide with the program make it interactive and enjoyable for them too.

When you sign into the app, you’ll see a dedicated “Reading Tab” featuring hundreds of pieces of reading-related content, including exclusive shows focused on early language literacy and guest picked playlists from Universal’s Despicable Me and NFL star, Martellus Bennett (launching for Father’s Day) encouraging kids to get out there and discover the magic of reading.

YouTube Kids #ReadAlong campaign will feature hundreds of pieces of reading-related content including content from global publishers: HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and National Geographic Kids.  In addition, the #ReadAlong campaign will also feature content from Universal Studios’ Despicable Me and a special playlist from NFL star Martellus Bennett encouraging viewers to get out there and discover the magic of the written word. The campaign will be global and reach a number of regions including the United States, Australia, Canada, Ghana, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe. Here are some highlights:

  • They have created a new Kid Critic series that features book reviews for kids, by kids.

Penguin Random House:

  • Penguin Random House has developed several picture book read-along videos for Reading Month on the YouTube Kids app.  Most of the content will be featured on their Brightly Kids YouTube Channel.

National Geographic Kids:

  • National Geographic is eager to expose young readers to non-fiction books, an area that is often limited for early readers.

  • The National Geographic Kids channel on YouTube and YouTube Kids will feature several reading-related videos about animals, nature, and more!

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

  • During June, HMH’s Curious World channel will publish one storybook video a day for 30 days to go into a playlist called, “30 Fairytales and Fables #ReadAlong.”
